Editorial Page Editor Rudolph Bush introduces a new Opinion series, Saving Downtown
The Dallas Morning News
Beginning today, we are launching a series of editorials and columns devoted to the idea that Dallas deserves a great downtown and that we can have one with thoughtful planning and dedication to a unified vision. We’re calling it, simply, Saving Downtown.
The debate over whether to tear down Dallas City Hall deserves to be a public discussion, not a private decision made behind closed doors. Every important decision comes with cost and opportunity, and we believe this one will set the direction for our city, and by extension the region, for many years to come.
We invite you to join us today by reading two important pieces from two different perspectives. The first, by business leader Ray Washburne, casts a vision for a new City Hall and a walkable downtown with grand boulevards, a central park and entertainment hubs connected by transit. The second, by a group of architects devoted to saving I.M. Pei’s City Hall, points to a vision for a refreshed City Hall and a revitalized plaza that they believe preserves Dallas history and offers the public a more welcoming municipal space.
As this debate develops, we will offer more commentary and additional visions. We believe Dallas can answer this difficult question of how to save downtown in a way that promotes growth, prosperity, functionality and greater beauty for our city. But it must be an answer rooted in public consideration.
