3. Large part of Texas under winter storm warning

Most of North, Central and West Texas are now under a winter storm warning as freezing temperatures and potential snow, sleet and freezing rain move into the region this weekend.

As of Thursday afternoon, Dallas-Fort Worth, Austin, the Texas Hill Country, parts of East Texas, the Panhandle and parts of West Texas are all under this winter storm warning. South Texas, which includes San Antonio, is under an extreme cold watch, and Southeast Texas, including Houston, is under a winter storm watch.

4. Hundreds of warming centers open around Texas for severe weather this weekend

As temperatures are set to plummet heading into the weekend, the Texas Division of Emergency Management (TDEM) has an interactive map of local shelters and seasonal relief centers throughout Texas, with hours, locations, phone numbers and special information such as whether pets are accepted at each.

5. ERCOT issues Weather Watch ahead of cold temperatures, grid conditions expected to be ‘normal’

The Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) has issued a Weather Watch for Jan. 24-27 ahead of incoming cold temperatures.

ERCOT says the Weather Watch is due to “forecasted below-freezing temperatures with the possibility of frozen precipitation, higher electrical demand, and the potential for lower reserves,” adding that grid conditions are expected to be normal during this period.

1. Federal officers detain a 5-year-old boy who a school official says was used as ‘bait’

A 5-year-old boy arriving home from preschool in Minnesota was taken by federal agents along with his father to a detention facility in Texas, school officials and the family’s lawyer said, making him the fourth student from his Minneapolis suburb to be detained by immigration officers in recent weeks.
