Winter storm brings icy conditions to North Texas, Oklahoma

GAINESVILLE, Texas — Icy roads formed Saturday in Cooke County and Gainesville, including on Interstate 35, as a winter storm moved through North Texas and Oklahoma.

A storage building at an auto body detail shop on US-82 in Gainesville collapsed due to the storm, according to KGAF radio. No vehicles or injuries were reported.

The Texas Department of Transportation posted images of snow-covered highways in the suburbs north of Dallas on Saturday.

“It’s happening!” the agency said. “If anyone asks you… yes… we do want you to stay in and avoid unnecessary travel as the winter storm moves through North Texas this weekend.”

Ice and sleet that hit northern Texas overnight were moving toward the central part of the state Saturday, the National Weather Service in Fort Worth said.

Oklahoma National Guard assists stranded drivers

The Oklahoma National Guard was assisting stuck drivers on icy roads in Bryan County overnight. Snow and sleet continued to fall in Oklahoma.

Over 2,000 people were without power in McCurtain County, Oklahoma.

Dangerous cold temperatures expected

“Dangerously cold temperatures and wind chills are spreading into the area and will remain in place into Monday,” the weather service said. Low temperatures will be mostly in the single digits for the next few nights, with wind chills as low as minus 12 degrees Fahrenheit.

More than 36,000 power outages were reported in Texas Saturday morning, including over 3,600 without power in Lamar County.

A severe cold snap five years ago took down much of the power grid in Texas, leaving millions without power for days and resulting in hundreds of deaths. Utility companies were bringing in thousands of employees to help keep the lights on.
