The Plano East Panthers boys basketball team took one more step toward the playoffs with a 52-47 victory over the McKinney Boyd Broncos on Thursday, Jan. 22. It was a game that saw the Panthers, who currently sit in second place in District 6-6A behind the soaring Allen Eagles, play well-rounded basketball, thanks mostly to the defiant play of sophomore guard Alexander Brewington.
Brewington, whom Plano East (22-6, 8-2 District 6-6A) head coach Matt Wester called “poised” after the game, poured in 18 points in the victory, 10 of which came during the crucial moments of the fourth quarter. McKinney Boyd (15-10, 4-5) was right on the Panthers’ tail, and every basket Brewington made proved necessary in delivering the team to a win.
“I was just impressed with the way Alexander [Brewington] kept his poise at the end of the game,” Wester said. “He’s not a very emotional kid. Because they’re good at defense as well, it was kind of frustrating, but you didn’t see that on him. … He just kind of held his head and carried us, got to the free-throw line, and made some much-needed baskets.”
