RUSSIA, Ohio (WLIO) — Russia continued its strong season and stayed atop the Shelby County League with a 42-24 victory over Houston on Tuesday night.
The Raiders set the tone early in the first quarter behind crisp ball movement and outside shooting.
Faith York opened the scoring by drilling a 3-pointer after receiving a kick-out pass from Hazel Francis in the lane.
Russia kept the pressure on as Cami Schafer used a pump fake to create space, driving to the basket for an easy layup.
Defense quickly turned into offense when Aryana Cordonnier jumped a passing lane and went coast to coast for a layup, helping the Raiders build a double-digit lead.
Houston showed fight despite the deficit. Olivia Burks attacked the paint and finished over a defender to keep the Wildcats within reach.
Russia responded once again, this time with Celeste Borchers navigating through traffic before stopping at the free-throw line and knocking down a short jumper.
The Raiders’ balanced scoring and defensive intensity proved too much for Houston.
With the win, Russia improved to 9-1 in league play, maintaining sole possession of first place in the Shelby County League.
