The current Assistant Director for San Antonio Metro Health will begin her tenure at the Corpus Christi–Nueces County Public Health District starting Oct. 20.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — The City of Corpus Christi has named Dr. Anita Kurian as the new director of the Corpus Christi–Nueces County Public Health District.

Kurian previously served as assistant director at the San Antonio Metropolitan Health District, where she was responsible for the activities of the Communicable Diseases Division. The division includes Epidemiology, Immunizations Division, STD/HIV clinic, and Tuberculosis clinic, according to the SAMHD website.

She is set to begin her new role on Oct. 20, according to city officials.

“She’s been able to successfully manage multiple and complex health programs. She’s collaborated with government agencies, non-profits, community stake holders,” said City of Corpus Christi Assistant City Manager Sony Peronel.

Nueces County Judge Connie Scott said the role is crucial, not just to city operations, but to the county as well when it comes to the Robstown clinic.

“It’s vital on our side because the county could not afford to do it on our own. So the partnership really helps us. I think one of the things that we were pretty adamant about in our contract and moving forward is having set days and set hours at the clinic,” she said.

Kurian will succeed interim director Dr. Dante Gonzalez, who has overseen the department since early this year following the departure of former director Dr. Fauzia Khan in January.
