Schools, government buildings and some polling places will remain closed on Jan. 26 as Winter Storm Fern had a late arrival to the Greater Houston area on Jan. 24.

Current situation

According to the National Weather Service, the Greater Houston area can expect continued temperatures below freezing into Jan. 27.

Per information on the Electric Reliability Council of Texas’ Grid and Market Conditions dashboard, power supply continues to outweigh demand. According to CenterPoint Energy’s outage tracker, 74 outages had been reported affecting roughly 648 customers as of Jan. 25 at approximately 3 p.m. CenterPoint Energy covers Harris, Fort Bend, Brazoria and Galveston counties.

At the same time, roughly 356 customers are without power in Montgomery County, according to Entergy Texas’ outage tracker.

Government closures

In The Woodlands, Town Center Trolleys and The Woodlands Express Bus service will not operate Jan. 26. All The Woodlands Township offices, including Town Hall and the Parks and Recreation campus, will likewise be closed Jan. 26. Any Village meetings scheduled for Jan. 26 have also been canceled.

In East Montgomery County, Roman Forest City Hall will be closed Jan. 26 due to inclement weather. The scheduled Jan. 26 Roman Forest City Council meeting has been rescheduled to Jan. 27 at 6 p.m.

In Montgomery County Precinct 4, water has been shut off at the Bull Sallas playground, Ed Rinehart Park, Ipes Park and Tram Park. The parks closed Jan. 24 and will reopen when officials are able to turn the water back on, according to a Jan. 23 social media post from Montgomery County Precinct 4.

In Katy, the city hall, municipal courts, parks, offices, museums and social services will be closed Jan. 26, according to a Jan. 25 news update. However, it was unclear as of Jan. 25 whether the Jan. 26 Katy City Council meeting would take place as planned.

“City staff will continue to monitor weather and road conditions to determine whether we can safely proceed with the regular City Council meeting at 6:30 p.m.,” the update on the city’s website reads.

In Fort Bend County, all offices will be closed Jan. 26 with normal county operations expected to resume Jan. 27. Jury duty has also been canceled.

Additionally, Fort Bend ISD’s regular board meeting scheduled for Jan. 26 has been postponed to Jan. 29 at 6 p.m., according to information on the district’s website.

Voting updates

All early voting centers for the special runoff election for Congressional District 18 closed Jan. 25-26 due to inclement weather, Harris County Clerk Teneshia Hudspeth announced via a Jan. 24 news release.

“The safety of voters, election workers and staff must come first,” Hudspeth said in a statement. “This decision was made in close coordination with state and local emergency management officials.”

Additionally, all Harris County Clerk’s offices will be closed Jan. 26. Officials noted reopening plans will be provided as soon as weather conditions improve.

Additional warming centers

More warming centers have opened across the Greater Houston area, in addition to the 13 warming centers that were announced in Harris County Jan. 22. All warming centers will be open through at least Jan. 26; however, residents are encouraged to call ahead if possible.

In Harris County, the American Red Cross and Precinct 3 Commissioner Tom Ramsey’s office opened an overnight shelter at the Trini Mendenhall Community Center at 1414 Wirt Road, Houston. The county has also opened at least two additional warming centers:

“Feeding operations are underway to support shelter residents, first responders and impacted neighborhoods as conditions evolve. As of yesterday, we have served 726 meals and distributed 9,612 emergency supplies, including snacks,” American Red Cross Officials said in a Jan. 25 news release. “Winter Storm Fern continues to impact our region, and we encourage everyone to check on neighbors, family and friends who may need extra support.”
