Most El Paso-area school districts will have delayed openings on Monday, Jan. 26, due to anticipated freezing temperatures and potential icy road conditions.

The El Paso, Ysleta, Socorro, Canutillo and Anthony school districts, El Paso Catholic Schools and Las Cruces Public Schools announced that they will have a two-hour delayed start on Monday from normal starting times. The morning Pre-K classes for 3-year-olds will be canceled for the day at the El Paso, Ysleta and Socorro districts.

School bus transportation will run two hours later than normal pick-up times. Socorro and Canutillo ISDs added that breakfast service will be provided on a two-hour delay.

All Canutillo Independent School District campuses will open their doors at 6 a.m. in case any student needs to be dropped off early and needs a warm place to wait for the start of the day, Canutillo ISD noted.

Snow was falling on Sunday morning in parts of El Paso, though the snow showers are forecast to leave the region by early afternoon, the National Weather Service stated.

Drivers should use caution due to slippery roads and the continued chance of mixed precipitation, as a winter weather advisory for the El Paso area continues until 11 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 25, the National Weather Service Office advised.

Additional snow could accumulate in neighboring Hudspeth County and the Hueco Mountains area, just east of El Paso, a NWS advisory stated.

Interstate 10 remains open, but travel is discouraged because of snow and icy conditions in other parts of Texas.

About 11:30 a.m. Sunday, the Hudspeth County Sheriff’s Office reported slow, bumper-to-bumper eastbound traffic on Interstate 10 west of Sierra Blanca, Texas. “Not the best traveling conditions so please stay off the roads,” the Hudspeth County Sheriff’s Office posted on Facebook.

Snow showers and cloudy skies in the El Paso area are expected to gradually clear up by Sunday afternoon, according to a forecast by the National Weather Service Office. Sunday night is expected to be clear with a low temperature of about 24 degrees.

Monday is expected to be sunny with a high of about 44, according to the NWS forecast.

Transmountain Road has been closed in both directions due to the weather, the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office reported.

Horse races that had been scheduled to take place on Sunday have been canceled at Sunland Park Racetrack & Casino.

Road between El Paso, Carlsbad, New Mexico closed

Snow on Sunday morning had covered parts of U.S. Highway 62/180, which connects El Paso with Carlsbad, New Mexico, according to Texas Department of Transportation roadway cameras.

The highway was closed on Saturday afternoon and remained closed as of early Sunday morning in the area just east of Hueco Tanks.
