Police said Sunday that a 16-year-old girl was killed and another girl was critically injured during a sledding accident in Frisco, the first publicly reported fatality linked to the blast of winter weather that arrived in North Texas two days ago.
Fire and police officials responded to reports of an accident at 2:26 p.m. near the intersection of Majestic Gardens Drive and Killian Court, police said in a written statement.
First responders found the two injured girls and began administering life-saving measures. Both were transported for treatment to a local hospital, where one was pronounced dead, authorities said.
The second teen remains in critical condition as of Sunday evening, the statement said.
Breaking News
Investigators determined a 16-year-old boy was driving a Jeep Wrangler while pulling the girls on a sled. Witnesses reported the sled struck a curb and collided with a tree.
Police did not say if the driver was injured or if any arrests have been made. Investigators also did not immediately say if the driver would face criminal charges in connection with the deadly accident.
No other identifying information about the individuals will be released due to them >because they are minors, police said.
Police urged people to keep in mind that snow and ice can create extremely slippery surfaces and lead to serious accidents.
“Please stay alert, stay indoors when possible, and avoid any unnecessary outdoor activity until conditions improve,” the statement said. “Your safety comes first.”
