Extreme cold warning this morning as dangerous conditions persist

  • January 26, 2026

LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – A strong high pressure system centered over the region is combining with cold air aloft to bring an Extreme Cold Warning through noon CST Monday, with wind chills expected to plummet to 15 to 20 degrees below zero throughout the morning.

Areas of dense freezing fog will persist across portions of the Caprock through Monday morning, creating hazardous driving conditions. Though shallow, the fog will leave a thin glaze of ice on roadways.

And on another brief note A 4.3 magnitude earthquake shook the region early Monday morning, striking 14 miles southwest of Snyder at 4:22 a.m., adding to a dramatic start to the week already marked by dangerously cold conditions.

Residents are urged to limit outdoor exposure as temperatures struggle to climb out of the single digits. Dangerously cold wind chills pose serious risks for frostbite and hypothermia, prompting weather officials to warn anyone venturing outside to take proper precautions.

Morning cloud cover is expected to gradually clear, giving way to a mostly sunny afternoon. However, temperatures will remain well below average, with highs reaching only into the mid to upper 20s. Another round of extremely cold lows in the single digits will return Monday night as a secondary upper trough descends from the Intermountain West.

Warming Trend Ahead

Relief arrives by midweek. Slightly warmer temperatures are expected from Tuesday through the end of the week, though conditions will remain below average with dry skies prevailing. Winds will gradually shift westward through daytime hours as the high pressure system moves eastward.

By Tuesday afternoon, abundant sunshine should accompany the warmer trend, with temperatures settling in the upper 30s to low 40s.

Morning lows will continue to dip below freezing each night, creating a cycle of hazardous road conditions throughout the week. As afternoon temperatures warm enough to melt ice and snow, refreezing will occur overnight, leaving slick and slippery conditions on roadways, sidewalks, overpasses and bridges each morning.
