SAN ANTONIO (KTSA News) — An effort is underway to keep San Antonio’s rainbow crosswalk.
The colorful crossing, located at the intersection of North Main Avenue and Evergreen, has been in place since 2018.
Earlier this month, Governor Greg Abbott issued a directive for communities to remove all roadway markings considered political or that support an ideology.
He also instructed the Texas Department of Transportation to withhold funding from cities that fail to remove the markings.
The only exemptions would be if the markings benefit public safety.
According to a report from Texas Public Radio, that’s the route San Antonio officials will try to take.
The report states that First Assistant City Attorney Liz Provencio told a meeting of the city’s LGBTQ+ Advisory Commission that there has been a reduction in the number of traffic incidents since the crosswalk was installed.
The city has until November 8 to file an exemption.
