Wakeland High School officials have confirmed that a sophomore killed Sunday during a sledding accident in Frisco was 16-year-old Elizabeth Angle.

Elizabeth died after the sled she and another 16-year-old girl were on collided with a tree shortly before 2:30 p.m. near the intersection of Majestic Gardens Drive and Killian Court, Wakeland Principal Donna Edge confirmed in a statement.

According to Edge, Elizabeth was a member of the school’s soccer team and was well-liked by peers and teachers.

“Our entire campus community is impacted by this tragedy,” Edge wrote.

The sled was being pulled by a Jeep Wrangler driven by a 16-year-old boy, according to Frisco police. After the accident, both girls were taken to local hospitals, where Elizabeth died.

As of 8 a.m. Monday, the other girl was in critical condition, said Ryan Thomas, a spokesman for the Frisco Police Department.

Police are investigating the accident with the assistance of the Denton County district attorney’s office to evaluate any potential criminal charges, Thomas said.

People came to the intersection Monday morning to honor the girls. A small tree in the area was adorned by bouquets of varicolored hydrangeas, white roses and purple chrysanthemums. Its trunk was later cloaked in pastel pink and green streamers.

Rick Lung, who lives in McKinney on the border of Frisco, brought two flowers to lay at the tree.

“I felt like I wanted to show some support,” said Lung, whose daughter knew the girls though he did not.

Frisco ISD is closed Monday and Tuesday due to the winter storm. Once students and staff return to school, Edge said Elizabeth’s death will be acknowledged during second period and support will be offered throughout the day and days to come.
