East Texas roads expected to thaw later today, but ice, black ice remains

  • January 27, 2026

TYLER, Texas (KLTV) – As the fourth day of last weekend’s winter event begins, some roads are clear of ice while others still have patches of ice.

With the sun helping thaw some roadways during Monday afternoon, some melted ice has drained or washed away from roads, but what wasn’t able to melt off the road refroze overnight. Because of that, officials are still asking drivers to be cautious on the road.

“If you don’t have to get out, don’t get out,” says Tyler Police Public Information Officer Andy Erbaugh in an interview yesterday.

The overnight freeze has led to new formations of black ice, which the National Weather Service defines as clear ice that reveals the roadway below it while still creating slippery conditions, meaning that you may not be able to see the ice before you drive over it. Black ice is most common during the early morning hours after an overnight freeze. Officials, including from TxDOT and east Texas law enforcement agencies, are encouraging people to avoid roads if possible today, and to drive slowly and cautiously if you do need to drive.

Later today, above-freezing temperatures are expected to melt away most ice across east Texas roads. Shady spots, overpasses, and bridges may still hold ice longer than other roads, so be cautious in those areas.
