According to CCPD, Ricardo Rojas was released from a hospital and transported to the City Detention Center for booking following last week’s shootings.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Corpus Christi police have booked a man accused in a deadly westside shooting and a subsequent shootout with officers after he was released from medical care.

According to Corpus Christi Police Department Public Information Officer Madeline Vaughn, Ricardo Rojas was discharged from a local hospital Tuesday and transported to the City Detention Center for booking.

Vaughn said Rojas has been charged with four counts of attempted capital murder, one count of murder, and unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon.

Police say the charges stem from a series of shootings Friday afternoon that began near the intersection of Ayers Street and McArdle Road. Officers were initially called to that location around 2:45 p.m., where they found a man suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. The victim was transported to a hospital and later died.

The Nueces County Medical Examiner identified the victim as 39-year-old Daniel Suarez.

Minutes later, police say officers located the suspect’s vehicle and attempted a traffic stop near Port Avenue and Agnes Street. Authorities say a shootout followed between Rojas and responding officers.

Two Corpus Christi police officers were shot during that encounter. Police said one officer has since been released from the hospital, while the other remains hospitalized in critical condition. A third officer was treated at the scene for minor injuries caused by shrapnel.

Police previously said Rojas was hospitalized following the shootout and remained under police guard while receiving treatment.

Vaughn said Rojas is now in custody at the City Detention Center as the investigation continues.
