Two people are dead after a fire broke out in their West Side home Monday night, the San Antonio Police Department said.

Fire crews responded around 11 p.m. to the 400 block of S. San Dario Avenue, where an extensive fire was ravaging a single-family home. They immediately began searching for a man and woman who were reportedly trapped inside.

The response was elevated to a two-alarm fire, meaning the fire department needed to request assistance from neighboring departments.

Firefighters made an “aggressive attack” on the main fire and extinguished it in about 30 minutes.

Crews rescued the man and woman from the home and took the pair to the hospital, where they were both pronounced dead.

The Bexar County Medical Examiner will identify the victims and determine their cause and manner of death.

A battalion chief at the scene said he believed the home was a total loss. The department is investigating the cause of the fire.
