The Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo was digging out from a coating of ice Tuesday morning, but amid the winter white was a standout color — pink.
Tuesday marked the annual “Stock Show Goes Pink” event, which raises money for the Careity Foundation and awareness for cancer patients. The local nonprofit supports people with all types of cancer, from early detection through treatment.
Leon Henry, a volunteer and sponsor for Careity, said the mission hits close to home for many.
“Because they’ve all got family members or friends that have had cancer,” Henry said. “It’s very important. Because every one of us in the world knows somebody that had cancer, or has cancer, or survived cancer.”
Half of the general admission and rodeo ticket sales on Tuesday were directed to Careity’s work.
Kay Christian, dressed in light pink, said the day carries personal meaning. “I am about a 15-year breast cancer survivor,” she said. “That’s what I like about days like today. I’m not gonna say it makes it normal because we don’t ever want it to be normal, we just want it to be accepted.”
Careity also hosts an annual survivor’s luncheon as part of the event. This year’s luncheon has been postponed to Thursday, Feb. 5, due to winter weather.
The nonprofit continues to seek private and corporate sponsors to help expand its reach.
“They help the women, the children, the men, all types of cancer,” Henry said. “They help them work through it and get everyone taken care of and save lives.”
