1. Abbott to investigate public school, university use of hiring through H-1B visas
Gov. Greg Abbott said Monday he will begin investigating the extent to which Texas public universities and schools are using the federal H-1B visa program, worrying they could be abusing it.
“What I’m looking at, is the extent to which Texas taxpayer dollars are being used to pay for any of these people … in our public schools,” Abbott said during a podcast with Mark Davis, a conservative radio host. “We have inquiries out right now to all of those agencies.”
2. Trump administration highlights fentanyl crackdown during drug czar visit to El Paso
The Trump administration says the days of drug cartels operating with impunity are ending, pointing to what it calls significant progress in stopping fentanyl at the southern border.
That message was delivered in El Paso by Director of the Office of National Drug Control Policy Sara A. Carter, during a visit focused on border security and the fight against deadly narcotics.
3. U.S. Congressional District 18 special election early voting extended by 2 days
A district court judge has ordered Harris County to extend the duration of early voting for the runoff election for the 18th Congressional District, according to multiple sources and the Harris County Elections Department’s Facebook page.

Austin Public Library to host Black History Month panel
The Austin Public Library on West César Chávez Street is hosting a panel on Feb. 25 titled “Holding Space Through Food: Black Stories from Soil to Stove.” It will discuss Black foodways in Austin, centering “stories of land, labor, culture and community all through lived experiences,” according to their website.
The panel is part of an art exhibit over two months long at the library’s gallery called Holding Spaces Project, dedicated to Black entrepreneurs in Austin.
