Update on January 24 at 9:22 p.m.: All southbound lanes have reopened on U.S. Highway 183 at Cameron Road.
Below-freezing temperatures and ice accumulation during the winter storm are already affecting travel in Central Texas on Saturday night, January 24, as a major crash appears to have closed a highway in North Austin.
According to the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT), a collision occurred on U.S. Highway 183 South near Cameron Road in Austin, Texas. An incident report on TxDOT’s website indicates the wreck has been verified and that all four mainlanes, along with the two shoulders, are closed. A TxDOT camera shows bright lights that appear to be emergency personnel and an empty highway, which appears to be the southbound lanes of 183 that are closed.
The collision was confirmed by TxDOT at 8:23 p.m. on Saturday, per the department’s website. It’s unclear what led to the accident or how many vehicles were involved. TxDOT cameras show the roads are slick, and many surfaces are starting to ice over. Earlier this evening, Cedar Park Police on social media said they were assisting with numerous wrecks due to ice accumulations on roadways.
