The Diocese of Corpus Christi is preparing for a historic day as Bishop Mario Avilés becomes the diocese’s ninth bishop.

A solemn vespers service was held Tuesday to welcome Bishop Avilés, during which he made his profession of faith and took the oath of fidelity.

Today, a special Mass of Installation will be celebrated at 2 p.m. at Most Precious Blood Catholic Church.

Seating will be limited due to high attendance, but members of the faith are encouraged to watch the live stream here.

Bishop Mario Avilés previously served as the auxiliary Bishop of the Diocese of Brownsville since 2018.

In December 2025, Bishop Michael Mulvey said, “We welcome Bishop-designate Avilés with open hearts and deep prayer. “

He continued, “As we begin the season of Advent, we are reminded that Christ continues to guide His Church. This is a moment of grace for the Diocese of Corpus Christi.”
