The agency’s board of directors approved the plan to adapt to Central Texas’ growth.
AUSTIN, Texas — CapMetro’s transit routes are evolving to meet growing demand in the Austin area.
On Monday, the agency’s board of directors approved Transit Plan 2035, an initiative 18 months in the making that focuses on improving routes and service reliability.
Officials said more than 10,000 community members shared feedback through surveys, open houses, pop-up events and online tools to help understand the public’s priorities.
“Transit Plan 2035 is truly a community-built plan, as nearly 40% of it changed based on thoughtful feedback from Central Texans during the second round of engagement alone,” CapMetro President and CEO Dottie Watkins said.
“Our regional community is the reason we exist, and through Transit Plan 2035, we are committed to expanding a service that’s more connected, consistent and efficient for everyone.”
The plan aligns with CapMetro’s existing travel network and incorporates Austin’s light rail expansion to keep pace with the city’s rapid growth.
During the first five years, the agency plans to improve bus routes and enhance light rail services. CapMetro is also planning to fully launch Rapid 800 and 837 as part of Project Connect.
After that, CapMetro aims to integrate further with Austin Light Rail, expand regional connectivity, add two new Pickup Zones to the existing five and continue upgrading bus routes.
Over the next decade, the agency plans to continue Project Connect investments and support its regional express network.
Transit Plan 2035 will take effect in 2026, with improvements rolled out in phases. Officials said CapMetro updates its long-term transit plan every five years, with recommendations expected to be reviewed and refined around 2030.
