Auburn basketball picked up its fourth consecutive victory on Wednesday night by defeating Texas 88-82. Auburn’s 1-3 conference start seems like a distant memory now that the Tigers are 5-3 in the SEC, and 14-7 overall.
The win did not come easily for the Tigers. The Longhorns built a 14-point lead in the first half and were 8-of-14 from three-point land in the first 20 minutes. This was also a big win for Auburn with what is coming next on the schedule. Auburn will travel to Tennessee on Saturday and will host Alabama on Feb. 7.
Here are five key statistics from Auburn’s 88-82 win over Texas.
Auburn’s three-point shooting
It has been well documented that Auburn has not shot the ball well from the three-point line lately. Coming into the game, the Tigers were shooting just 27% in SEC games. That was not the case versus the Texas Longhorns. Auburn was 11-of-21 from three-point territory, shooting 52%.

With the Tigers down 42-34 at halftime, Keyshawn Hall only had five points in the game. It was not that he was struggling with his shot. Texas did a great job of not letting him get many touches. It was a different story in the second half. Hall scored 25 of his 31 points in the second half. That included going 11-of-14 at the free-throw line.
After the game, Hall talked about the difference in the second half.
“I feel like we just stay consistent with what we are doing,” Hall said. “We knew they were collapsing, so once we got a couple catch-and-shoot threes by Kevin Overton right here, and a couple guys just catch-and-shoot threes and made them fan out to their man. Once they fell to a man, it’s a one-on-one game after that, and once it is one-on-one, it is kind of hard to stop us.”
Kevin Overton’s perfect second half
As great as Hall is, he cannot do it alone. He had help in a big way on Wednesday night with 25 points from Kevin Overton. He scored eight points in the first half, but he was perfect in shooting the ball in the second half. Overton scored 17 points and did not miss. He made all of his shots from the floor and connected on all eight free throws. “So when he makes shots, our offense is way different,” said head coach Steven Pearl. Obviously, we don’t win tonight if he and Keyshawn Hall don’t make eight threes. He’s capable of doing that, and I know it’s in there.”
Free throw line
Auburn missed ten free throws in the game, but the frequency with which they got to the line was key. The Tigers were 29 of 39 from the free line. They were able to get to the line 28 times in the second half and connected on 22. Hall was the leader with 14 attempts, and Overton had eight in the game. It was also a big advantage with Auburn due to them losing the battle in the paint for the first time in SEC competition. Auburn did a good job getting the free shots.
Auburn wins turnover battle
Auburn did a good job of taking care of the basketball against Texas. The Tigers only turned the ball over three times versus 11 for Texas. Auburn took advantage of those Longhorns’ mistakes and turned them into 18 points. Those three turnovers by Auburn tied a school record for the lowest number of turnovers in a game.
