CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Registered nurses in Corpus Christi will hold a vigil Thursday evening to honor a Minnesota nurse who was killed and to call for changes to federal immigration enforcement policies.

In a press release from the National Nurses United (NNU), nurses from Corpus Christi Medical Center are organizing a vigil to remember Alex Pretti, a registered nurse who federal officers killed in Minneapolis.

Organizers say the vigil will also recognize others they believe have died in connection with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

The vigil is scheduled for 6:45 p.m. on Thursday at Doctors Regional Medical Center, located at the corner of South Alameda Street and Texan Trail in Corpus Christi.

Organizers say participants will call on Congress to stop additional funding for ICE and reverse current funding levels.

NNU said nurses have raised concerns about immigration enforcement in communities and detention facilities, citing reports of deaths in ICE custody and concerns about medical care.

Petti’s death is the latest incident to have drawn national attention.
