EL PASO COUNTY, Colo. (KKTV) – A driver suspected of eluding law enforcement multiple times in El Paso County was arrested on Saturday after the sheriff’s office said he crashed his car after recklessly driving up and down Powers Boulevard.
According to the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office (EPSO), deputies on patrol at around 7:50 p.m. observed a Scion tC sedan that they believed was involved in “several” recent incidents related to eluding law enforcement. Deputies said they initiated a traffic stop as the sedan pulled into a parking lot, but the driver fled and deputies did not follow him.
Later that evening, at around 9:30, deputies saw the sedan again, this time traveling north on Powers Boulevard near Galley Road. EPSO said the driver was recklessly driving down Powers and ran a red light at Powers and Palmer Park, and deputies called in troopers with Colorado State Patrol to assist.
EPSO said later in the night, after 11 p.m., deputies saw the car driving recklessly on Powers again, this time southbound near North Carefree. Law enforcement officers positioned themselves along Powers Boulevard to keep eyes on the car as it drove down the road.
The sheriff’s office said once the car reached the area of Aeroplaza Drive, the driver sped up, and due to recent snowfall and road conditions, he lost control of the car, hit the median, and slid to the right shoulder.
Once the car stopped, deputies and troopers blocked the car so it could not leave again, and the driver, 19-year-old David Christman, was taken into custody without further incident. EPSO said a passenger was also detained.
Christman was taken to the hospital for a medical check before being taken to the El Paso County jail. He was booked on three counts of Felony Eluding, as well as Reckless Driving, Reckless Endangerment and multiple other traffic violations.
The sheriff’s office said Christman was released from jail on Monday on $4,000 bond.
