The suspect was arrested after an overnight search in Grimes County, officials say.

GRIMES COUNTY, Texas — A man suspected of killing his wife, an Alvarado High School teacher, was arrested in southeastern Texas over the weekend after an overnight search, officials say.

Alvarado police say Chelsea Spillers, 33, was found dead at her home around 5:30 p.m. Oct. 18. Investigators said Spillers’ cause of death is believed to be blunt force trauma.

Following an investigation, police said they obtained an arrest warrant for Spillers’ husband, Brandon Ashley. He was later arrested by Grimes County Sheriff’s Deputies and is awaiting extradition to Johnson County.

Alvarado ISD, in a statement, remembered Spillers as “a dedicated educator.”

“We were saddened to hear of the tragic passing of a beloved Alvarado High School educator, Chelsea Spillers, on Saturday. She was a dedicated educator who loved her scholars and Alvarado ISD team,” Alvarado ISD said in a statement. “Our thoughts and prayers are with her family, friends, and our entire Alvarado ISD family. Alvarado ISD has counselors available by phone today and will be available in person on campus for scholars and educators for as long as needed.”

The Grimes County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a man trespassing at a home off of FM 1696 in Bedias, about 30 miles west of Huntsville, shortly after 7 p.m. Oct. 19, according to a statement. The caller reported the man was wearing black shorts and no shirt and “appeared to be experiencing a possible mental health episode,” deputies said.

Deputies were told the man may have a pistol in his pocket and area residents reported the same man had “knocked on several doors earlier in the day asking for a shirt,” according to a press release.

“The subject was also reportedly avoiding State Highway 90, stating there were ‘too many cops,'” the statement continued.

Deputies patrolled the Bedias area the night of Oct. 19, but didn’t find the man.

Then, shortly after 9 a.m. Oct. 20, deputies were called about a “suspicious” vehicle, a black Cadillac Escalade that was believed to be stolen, at a private property near County Road 115, officials said.

A constable was told at about 10:10 a.m. Oct. 20 that the suspect had been at the Smiley’s convenience store in Bedias, and the suspect was detained in the area at about 10:12 a.m., according to a statement.

Later that morning, deputies say they also recovered an Astra .357 caliber revolver.

Further investigation found that the suspect, later identified as Ashley, was wanted out of Johnson County for Spillers’ murder, according to the Grimes County Sheriff’s Office.

Ashley was taken for medical evaluation and then taken to Grimes County Jail to await extradition to Johnson County, officials said.

Grimes County officials say the investigation remains active.

The district said there will be a moment of silence before the kickoff of Friday’s game.Â
