EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — An internal document from Crunch Fitness, a U.S. franchised fitness club, is circulating online – the document details what front desk employees should do if U.S. Immigration and Customs and Protection officers visit.
The Crunch Fitness involved is the east side location at 2060 N Zaragoza Road. The franchise is operated by Undefeated Tribe Operating Company, LLC. A representative at the northeast location on Dyer tells KTSM 9 News the two locations are operated by different general managers and could not confirm if their location received the same memo.
KTSM reached out to Crunch Fitness to validate the legitimacy of the memo and learned from a representative at the eastside location that the document was real but was only meant for internal usage.
On the front page, Crunch lists emergency contacts to call in case ICE visits and includes: “Our Company policy is to cooperate with any law enforcement officer.”
The reference also includes an employee’s role in a raid, how to and to not behave, and a list of public and private areas that state where officers can operate freely.
In reaction to this story, one Facebook user wrote, “Compliance does not mean agreeance.” Another Facebook user posted, “Of course they should comply with law enforcement, it’s illegal not to.”
This memo comes as ICE immigration operations continue to happen across the nation with agents arriving at workplaces, sparking controversy.
KTSM reached out to Crunch’s parent company and is awaiting a statement. We also asked the Department of Homeland Security if they had comment for response, but have not heard back as of 2:30 p.m. Thursday, January 29. This story will be updated as more information becomes available.
