Houston to open 12 warming centers ahead of hard freeze this weekend

  • January 30, 2026

Houston Mayor John Whitmire and the Office of Emergency Management announced another round of warming centers will open across the city in response to a National Weather Service forecast calling for a hard freeze this weekend.

A total of 12 warming centers will open Friday, Jan. 30, 2026, at 5 p.m. and operate 24 hours a day, providing a secure place for residents in need as temperatures are expected to drop significantly.

All overnight warming centers will offer blankets, snacks, and water.

In addition to the warming centers, more than 100 city facilities are currently open during their normal operating hours to provide respite from the cold weather.

Residents can find a map of Houston warming centers on the City of Houston Office of Emergency Management website here.

Along with the activation of warming centers, Mayor Whitmire encouraged Houstonians to rely on trusted sources for weather updates and information. City officials also reminded residents to follow the “4 P’s” during cold weather: check on loved ones and vulnerable neighbors, remember pets, winterize external pipes, and protect affected plants and shrubs.
