LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – Texas Tech University has moved into the top 20 percent nationwide in the 2026 U.S. News and World Report online college rankings as online learning becomes an accessible option for students to earn their degrees.
Online students held to same standard
Ashlee Brown, associate vice provost, said Texas Tech has shown it is one of the best universities to attend for online education, with students as their top priority.
“We want our students to be successful and that’s really the foundational principle that my team and online student service and Texas Tech in general is really working towards,” Brown said.
Brown says the university holds its online students to the same standard as its in-person students.
“We maintain a very high rigor in our online courses, and we prove that by our courses are being taught by faculty who also teach our face-to-face students. There’s no difference in the professors’ qualifications, certainly, but also the expectations for our online students don’t waver from our traditional students on campus,” Brown said.
It’s never to late to get your degree
Dave Alegria, a Texas Tech student who has taken both in-person and online classes, said he has had people of all ages in his classes and believes the opportunity for a degree is there for everyone.
“In my personal opinion, there is never a time, it’s never too late to come to college,” Alegria said. “I think we all have the same opportunity to take advantage of, and time is going to keep going by, so might as well take advantage of it now and get that degree.”
Brown said Texas Tech online serves anyone who wants to receive an education.
“We have our active military, we have our veterans, we have working parents, we have students who have for one reason or another had to move back home and unable to complete their degree here in Lubbock,” Brown said. “We’re trying to serve a population that doesn’t fit with the niche that we have for our more traditional on campus experiences,” Brown said.
The university will offer 36 undergraduate online degrees this fall.
