The Dr. Hector P. Garcia Memorial Foundation hosted its annual Legacy Luncheon, raising scholarship funds and honoring the civil rights leader’s lasting impact.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — The Dr. Hector P. Garcia Memorial Foundation hosted its annual Legacy Luncheon on Thursday, drawing a record crowd to honor the life and work of the late civil rights leader and health care pioneer.

Foundation President Cecilia Garcia Akers said this year’s event was the largest the organization has hosted to date.

“This is the biggest one we’ve had so far,” Garcia Akers said.

According to Garcia Akers, nearly 5,600 people attended the luncheon, and the event raised more than $500,000 in contributions benefiting educational institutions and health care initiatives.

“Almost 5,600 people are here, we’ve hit over half a million dollars in contributions to different educational institutions and for health care,” she said.

The annual fundraiser supports scholarships for students across Texas pursuing careers in health care. Foundation officials say the scholarship program continues the mission and legacy of Dr. Hector P. Garcia, whose lifelong work focused on compassion, patient education and expanding access to care for underserved communities.

To date, the foundation has awarded approximately $500,000 in scholarships, helping students advance their education while carrying forward Dr. Garcia’s commitment to service and equity in health care.
