EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — The group some have called “the most important American quartet in history” is coming to the Sun City.
El Paso Pro Musica is hosting the Juilliard String Quartet (JSQ) at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, January 31, at the UTEP Fox Fine Arts Recital Hall.
According to their website, since 1946, the quartet has drawn on a deep engagement to classic music while also embracing the mission of championing new works. Each performance of the JSQ is a unique experience, bringing together the four members’ “profound understanding and unceasing curiosity” in sharing string music.
In the 2025–26 season, a new JSQ continues with Iraqi-American composer Michelle Barzel Ross reflecting Beethoven’s late quartets like Op. 130.
In years past, the JSQ’s 2024-25 season included collaborations with violinist Itzhak Perlman and pianists Emanuel Ax and Jean-Yves Thibaudet. They have made appearances at major venues, including Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles and Davies Symphony Hall in San Francisco.
A facet of the JSQ’s decades-old legacy also includes a celebrated discography, with recordings that continue to be rereleased by Sony Masterworks. The quartet’s latest album on Sony (2021) featured works by Beethoven, Bartók, and Dvořák, and was released with international critical acclaim. Other notable releases include an album featuring the world premiere recording of Davidovsky’s Fragments (2018) alongside Beethoven’s Op. 95 quartet and Bartók’s Quartet No. 1.
The JSQ’s members – Areta Zhulla, Leonard Fu, Molly Carr, and Astrid Schween – are all sought-after teachers on the string and chamber music faculties.
Tickets to see this world-renowned group are on sale right now. Prices start at $5 for UTEP students and staff and $25 for the public.
