1. Officers confront protesters at Texas facility as lawmaker visits father, son detained in Minnesota

Texas state police deployed chemical irritants toward protesters Wednesday outside a federal detention facility where a Democratic congressman met with a 5-year-old Ecuadorian boy and his father whose case has stirred anger over the Trump administration’s immigration crackdown.

2. 3 young brothers in Texas die after falling through icy pond during winter storm

Three brothers — ages 6, 8 and 9 — died in Texas during the massive winter storm gripping the U.S. after falling through an icy pond across the street from a house where they were staying, authorities said Tuesday.

3. 2 Texas district attorneys join national coalition of prosecutors against federal overreach

Two Texas district attorneys have joined a newly-created national group of prosecutors that say they’re fighting against federal overreach through accountability and education.

In a Wednesday press release, Travis County DA José Garza and Dallas County DA John Creuzot were named some of the founding participants of the Project for the Fight Against Federal Overreach, or Project FAFO.

4. Deaths of migrants in ICE custody raises concerns

In just the first month of the new year, three people have died in Texas while in custody of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

According to ICE, Luis Gustavo Núñez Cáceres died Jan. 5 while in ICE custody in a Houston-area hospital after being admitted for chronic heart-related health issues. The other deaths happened at the East Montana Detention Facility in El Paso. Citing human rights violations, the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) has repeatedly called for the facility to be shut down.

5. South Texas aquarium leads sea turtle rescue effort amid winter weather

The winter storm affected all creatures big and small, including the marine life in South Texas, specifically the sea turtles. Nearly 400 sea turtles were rescued from the cold temperatures along the Texas coast in Corpus Christi.

The turtles were being kept safe and warm at the Texas State Aquarium Wildlife Rescue Center until they can be released back into the wild. The aquarium itself has been dubbed the third-best aquarium in the country.

1. Justice Department opens federal civil rights probe into fatal shooting of Alex Pretti

The Justice Department has opened a federal civil rights investigation into the shooting of Alex Pretti, the Minneapolis resident killed Saturday by Border Patrol officers, Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche said Friday.
