Texas SNAP benefits at risk as government shutdown continues

  • October 21, 2025

LAREDO, Tex. (KGNS) – Over 350,000 people in Texas could lose their food assistance benefits if the federal government shutdown continues past a specific date.

Texas officials announced that the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) will be halted if the federal shutdown extends beyond October 27.

The program is a vital food resource for residents in Texas’s 28th District, which includes Laredo. If benefits are lost, many residents may have to rely on local food banks for assistance. This could put additional pressure on these organizations to meet the increased demand during the shutdown.

The 28th District includes portions of South Texas and the border region, where SNAP benefits provide essential nutrition support for hundreds of thousands of residents.

Congressman Henry Cuellar is calling for community members to help one another as the federal impasse continues and uncertainty grows over food assistance programs.

Cuellar stated, “The community has always stood up and come together, not only in Laredo but in different parts of the area. I certainly encourage them to do that.“ He continued, “There’s been some cuts, so it’s one of those things where the community will come together. We want to help, but the best way that we can help is by stopping the shutdown and getting back on track.“

Laredo Mayor Dr. Victor Treviño is actively participating in the discussion, releasing a statement that the city will work with local food banks if food benefits are affected.

He also noted that other assistance programs, such as Temporary Assistance for Needy Families, the Women, Infants and Children program (WIC), Medicaid, and the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP), are currently not impacted by the government shutdown.

The complete statement can be seen below:

“We are aware that the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program may be impacted due to the lack of federal funding. Thousands of families in our community will be impacted if this should occur. This is the reason why I brought the item before the City Council, and some of these benefits will be carried through the Women, Infants and Children program for expecting mothers and children up to five.

Currently, the employees and services will be covered through WIC, but the food benefits will have to be dealt with separately. The annual budget for our local WIC is around 6 million. We will be trying to work with the local food banks if the food benefits are impacted.”
