CANYON, Texas (KFDA) – Both West Texas A&M basketball teams fell to ranked opponents in front of the home crowd Saturday afternoon.
The #6 Lady Buffs played host to the #3 Texas Woman’s Pioneers. Both teams came in undefeated in conference play and tied for first in the conference.
TWU took control most of the game, but the Lady Buffs continued to fight.
Taylor Haggan was able to tie the game with under a minute left after she was fouled on her made basket. She would tie it completing the free throw.
The Pioneers took the lead once again off two made free throws. With six seconds left, Haggan went to work and her floater beat the buzzer to send the game to overtime tied at 67-all.
The Pioneers were just too strong, handing the Lady Buffs their first loss in 19 straight games after the 78-74 finish.
Kyla Kane led the scoring for the Lady Buffs with 22 points. Four of her teammates also were in double-digits: Taytum Bell (12), Randi Harding (11), Haggan (10), and Karley Motschenbacher (10).
Motschenbacher also recorded a double-double in the loss with 11 boards.
The Lady Buffs are now 11-1 in conference play and 19-2 overall. They’ll face Cameron on the road Feb. 5.
The Buffs took the court right after, hosting the #24 Dallas Baptist Patriots, who are coming off a buzzer-beater loss from Eastern New Mexico two days prior.
The Buffs went into halftime down nine, but battled strong in the second half, outscoring the Patriots by seven, but fell in the end, 86-84.
WT is now on a five-game losing streak in conference play.
Despite the loss, five Buffs were in double-digits: Fontaine Williams, Jr. (19), Brock Mishak (15), James Parlow, Jr. (13), Camden Cowgill (11), and Jailyn Sledge (11).
Sledge also finished with a double-double, grabbing 10 boards in the game.
The Buffs are now 6-6 in conference play and 14-8 overall. They have a chance to get back in the win column Thursday, going on the road to face Cameron Feb. 5.
