ORLANDO, Fla. (KCBD) – The No. 11 Texas Tech Red Raiders (16-5, 6-2) saw their five-game conference winning streak come to an end Saturday as they fell to the UCF Knights 88-80.
Tech forward JT Toppin started off the game with a hook-shot to give the Red Raiders an early 2-0 lead. With 8:16 left in the first half, a Luke Bamgboye layup put Tech in front 26-24. Other than those two scores, UCF stayed ahead throughout.
With 1:55 left in the game, Toppin brought the Red Raiders within two (81-79). However, a late turnover led to a score from Knight forward Themus Fulks. From there, Tech’s only point came when LeJuan Watts made 1-of-2 free throws with :00 left on the clock.
This is the Red Raiders’ first loss in almost four weeks, and second in the Big 12. UCF led with points in the paint (24-12) and outrebounded Tech (35-23).
Toppin registered another double-double with 27 points and ten boards. While point guard Christian Anderson had 17 points, Donovon Atwell had 11.
This was the team’s first game back after a seven-day hiatus. They now have a quick two-day break before they host No. 14 Kansas on ESPN’s “Big Monday”. Tipoff set for 8 p.m. at the United Supermarkets Arena.
