One by one, players for the Plano East girls basketball team walked up a ladder that was positioned underneath the basket on the East side of McAfee Gymnasium.
Each player, with scissors in her hand, cut off a piece of the net.
Head coach Derrick Richardson cut off the last piece, lifted what remained of the net in the air, shook it a few times in a celebratory fashion before placing it around his neck.
The Lady Panthers, who defeated Prosper Rock Hill 57-35 on Friday night to win the District 6-6A championship, are hopeful that is the first of many more nets that they will cut down this season.
“This was one of our goals from the beginning of the season, which was to win a district championship,” said sophomore guard Arianna Robinson. “This is great, but we want to be able to cut down more nets and win a lot more games before the end of the season.”
