AUSTIN, Texas — Travis County Commissioners have unanimously approved a $124,953.50 feasibility study to explore the potential of a high-speed rail connection between Austin and San Antonio. The study, conducted by HNTB Corporation, will examine current rail infrastructure and potential service options, focusing on utilizing the right of way along state highways and interstate regions.
The proposed route would extend from State Highway 130 near Austin-Bergstrom International Airport to Interstate 10 in San Antonio.
Travis County Judge Andy Brown expressed enthusiasm for the project, stating, “I’m very excited about this one.” He added, “This is looking at if we can squeeze a passenger rail route in the right of way that does not involve taking a lot of private land. I think that makes the possibility of getting rail between Austin down to Bexar County that much more realistic.”

Precinct One Commissioner Jeff Travillion emphasized the economic opportunities, saying, “We just have to make sure that everybody understands that there are real economic opportunities to move freight and to move people.”
Mario Sosa shared his excitement about the potential ease of commuting, stating, “If they have an easier way to transport into Austin, it’s going to make it a lot cooler.” He also added that, ” I-35 is usually very congested. If they add stops between, you know, here and there, it’s going to make transportation a lot easier.”
Precinct Two Commissioner Brigid Shea echoed those sentiments about I-35 and said, “People are just ecstatic about the prospect, cause nobody likes being stuck on I-35.”
The study is expected to be completed by next summer, with the possibility of further collaboration with other counties and corporations for additional funding if the project progresses.
