HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — Theater lovers and researchers will soon be able to explore personal items of Tommy Tune, a Broadway icon and 10-time Tony Award winner. Tune, along with his sister Gracey, donated 50,000 personal items that span his life and career to the University of Houston.
“He is a choreographer, a dancer, a performer, a singer, director. He’s really done it all, a Broadway renaissance man,” Archivist Katy Allred said. “We are really excited and honored to have his collection here.”
Tune was raised in Houston and attended Lamar High School. After graduating from the University of Texas at Austin, Tune returned to the Bayou City for his graduate studies at the University of Houston.
In an statement, Tune explained why UH was the right spot to house his collection: “The University of Houston felt like the natural home for it because it’s where my story truly began,” Tommy said. “This collection represents my life in musical theater, and I want it to inspire the next generation of artists in the city that first inspired me.”
In the video above, University archivists provide us a preview of his collection, including his costumes and Tune’s personal artwork. The collection is currently being processed and is not yet available for public viewing.
