A deeper look at UIL’s 2026-28 realignment’s impact across the South Plains

LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – The new numbers are out, phone calls have been made, and schedules are being finalized. The University Interscholastic League’s 2026-28 districts were announced Monday. Below are football districts for 2026-2028.

Conference 5A Division 1

District 2 – Abilene High, Amarillo High, Amarillo Caprock, Amarillo Tascosa, Frenship, Frenship Memorial, Lubbock High, Monterey

For the first time since the 6A classification was established in 2014, Frenship will not be a 6A school- meaning there are no 6A schools in the South Plains. They hey are replacing Coronado in District 2, and will be joining schools from Abilene, Amarillo and Lubbock. This will also be Memorial’s first year with a full-time varsity schedule.

Conference 5A Division 2

District 2 – Abilene Cooper, Abilene Wylie, Amarillo Palo Duro, Lubbock Cooper, Coronado, Wichita Falls Legacy, Wichita Falls Memorial

Coronado is dropping down from 5AD1 to 5AD2, replacing Plainview.

Conference 4A Division 1

District 3 – Andrews, Midland Greenwood, Plainview, San Angelo Lake View

This is a new four-team district which includes Plainview, who dropped from 5A, D2. Midland Greenwood is also moving up from 4AD2.

Conference 4A Division 2

District 2 – Big Spring, Fort Stockton, Monahans, Pecos, Seminole, Snyder

Big Spring and Pecos are joining the district, down from 4AD1, replacing Midland Greenwood.

District 3 – Borger, Levelland, Lubbock Cooper Liberty, Lubbock Estacado, Perryton

This district is staying the same.

Conference 3A Division 1

District 1 – Brownfield, Bushland, Dalhart, Denver City, Shallowater

This was previously a four-team district. With River Road dropping to 3AD2, Brownfield and Denver City are sliding up from District 2.

District 2 – Clyde, Kermit, Lamesa, Odessa Compass Academy, Sweetwater, Tuscola Jim Ned

Kermit and Lamesa are the only schools staying put. Clyde, Sweetwater, and Jim Ned are the moving over from District 3, and Compass Academy is moving up from Division 2.

Conference 3A Division 2

District 1 – Amarillo River Road, Canadian, Childress, Dimmitt, Friona

River Road replaces Tulia, who is now 2AD1.

District 2 – Idalou, Littlefield, Lubbock Roosevelt, Muleshoe, Slaton

This district is staying the same.

Conference 2A Division 1

District 2 – Farwell, Floydada, Hale Center, Olton, Tulia

Farwell and Hale Center are moving up from 2AD2. Tulia is moving down from 3AD2. Floydada and Olton are remaining in place.

District 3 – Abernathy, New Deal, New Home, Post, Sundown

While Sundown is going up from DAD2, the other four teams are sliding over from District 2- which means they will start off their postseason facing teams from the Concho Valley instead of the Panhandle.

Conference 2A Division 2

District 1 – Bovina, Gruver, Sinnett West Texas, Stratford, Vega

West Texas drops from 2AD1, replacing Farwell who is going up to 2AD1.

District 2 – Morton, Plains, Ropes, Seagraves, Smyer, Sudan

Morton and Sudan are staying in place. Plains, Ropes, Seagraves, and Smyer are coming over from District 3, replacing Hale Center who is now 2AD1.

District 3 – Lockney, Big Spring Pathway Academy, Crosbyton, Ralls, Roscoe Collegiate, Tahoka

Crosbyton, Lockney, and Ralls are moving over from District 2. Pathway Academy is new to UIL. Tahoka is staying in place.

Conference 1A Division 1 6-Man

District 2 – Springlake-Earth, Nazareth, Whiteface, Whitharral

Whitharral is up from 1AD2, replacing Hart who is now 1AD2. Whiteface moves over from District 3.

District 3 – Happy, Kress, Petersburg, Silverton

Happy and Kress move over from District 2. Petersburg and Silverton come over from District 5.

District 4 – Aspermont, Hermleigh, Jayton, Roby, Rotan, Spur

After winning two state titles with a combined 30-0 record, Jayton is now going up to 1AD1. Spur arrives from District 5. Hermleigh comes in from District 7.

District 5 – Ackerly Sands, Borden County, Ira, Lamesa Klondike, O’Donnell, Westbrook

Sands and Klondike are also moving up to 1AD1. Borden County and O’Donnell move in from District 3. Ira and Westbrook come in from District 7.

Conference 1A Division 2 6-Man

District 2 – Chillicothe, Crowell, Guthrie, Matador Motley County, Paducah, Turkey Valley

Motley County and Paducah are staying in place. Valley drops down from 1AD1. Chillicothe, Crowell, and Guthrie are moving over from District 7.

District 3 – Amherst, Anton, Cotton Center, Hart, Lazbuddie, Lorenzo

Lorenzo comes in from 1AD1, replacing Whitharral who is now 1AD1.

District 4 – Loop, Meadow, Southland, Welch Dawson, Wellman-Union, Wilson

Meadow and Wellman-Union drop down from 1AD1, replacing Klondike and Sands who are moving up to 1AD1
