HARRIS COUNTY – A 13-year-old boy is dead after a shooting inside an apartment in north Harris County on Sunday afternoon, according to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies were called to an apartment complex along North Sam Houston Parkway near Wilson Road shortly after 2 p.m. after a woman dialed 911 reporting that a juvenile had been shot.
When deputies and EMS arrived, the boy was found on the floor inside the apartment and was pronounced dead at the scene.
“He suffered from at least one gunshot wound,” said Sgt. Michael Ritchie with the Harris County Sheriff’s Office Homicide Unit.
Investigators believe the woman who called 911 was the boy’s aunt, who deputies say he was living with at the apartment. Ritchie said the aunt told investigators she was in her room when she heard what she believed was a gunshot. When she came out, she found her nephew on the floor.
Authorities say two other teenage boys were also inside the apartment at the time of the shooting. Those teens initially left the scene but later returned and are now being questioned by investigators.
“Unfortunately, three juvenile males were involved in this situation, with one deceased,” Ritchie said.
At this point, investigators have not determined how the shooting happened.
“It is unclear if this shooting was intentional, accidental, or negligent,” Ritchie said. “That’s why we’re here — to determine exactly what happened.”
Deputies are reviewing surveillance video from inside and outside the apartment complex, which investigators say has been cooperative. Detectives are also working to determine where the firearm came from and who it belonged to.
Ritchie said investigators do not currently believe the aunt kept a firearm inside the apartment, but that has not been fully confirmed.
Authorities have not confirmed whether a gun was found at the scene, saying they were unable to search the apartment or the victim until the medical examiner arrived.
The Harris County Medical Examiner’s Office will conduct an autopsy within the next 24 hours to determine the official cause and manner of death.
No arrests have been announced, and the investigation remains ongoing.
Anyone with information is urged to contact the Harris County Sheriff’s Office.
