MULHALL, Okla. (KSWO) – On this day in 1885, Lucille Mulhall, who many know as “America’s first cowgirl,” was born.

Lucille was born in Mulhall, named after her father Zach Mulhall, on their family ranch. Throughout her childhood, she learned about riding, roping and cattle herding.

According to the Oklahoma Historical Society, Lucille was among the first women to compete against men in roping and riding. She impressed future president Theodore Roosevelt among attendees at the Rough Riders Reunion in Oklahoma City in 1900.

Lucille died in 1940 and was later inducted into the Rodeo Hall of Fame in 1975. She was also inducted into the National Cowgirl Hall of Fame in 1977.
