Dear readers: This is the third installment of First Responder of the Week. Each week, we’ll post a new entry rotating between Lubbock Police Department, Lubbock Fire Rescue and the Lubbock Sheriff’s Department.
Department: Lubbock County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Division (commonly called CID).
Name: Sophia Jaramillo.
Rank: Sergeant.
How long with department: 18 years.
Roles: Currently I work with domestic violence calls, missing persons and internal affairs investigations. I have worked with child abuse cases and sexual assaults for seven years. Member of SART (Sexual Abuse Response Team).
Professional Certification Level: Master Peace Officer (TCOLE).
Honors/highlights: Crime Victim’s Coalition Award Recipient – given for going above and beyond in the line of duty for victim’s rights.
Why did you choose this profession? I wanted to make a difference. Specifically, I was called to help people in stressful situations.
How do you deal with stressful situations? I take a calming approach to stress. With others, I try to help the person who is going through a difficult time understand that this is temporary. I share life experiences with victims and help bring perspective. For myself I try to keep that same larger perspective in mind.
Hobbies & interests: Traveling, hiking and watching movies.
