Live music backyard The Rustic is expanding outside of its longtime home in Dallas. The restaurant and bar is expected to open in The Colony, replacing the former Lava Cantina in Grandscape.

The Rustic is a 13-year-old indoor-outdoor music venue co-founded by Texas country artist Pat Green and Dallas restaurateurs Kyle Noonan and Josh Sepkowitz. It started — and remains — in a grassy area in Uptown Dallas, near Central Expressway.

It’s been among Texas’ highest-grossing venues in alcohol sales in the past, rivaling large venues like AT&T Stadium and the American Airlines Center in its heyday.

The Rustic has grown to Houston, but the new spot in The Colony marks the company’s first jump north of Dallas. It’s expected to have “the same rustic spirit that made the brand a staple for Texas music lovers, now planted closer to home for date nights, family brunch and group hangs in the burbs,” according to a statement.

The Rustic will join the development in The Colony with dozens of restaurants and bars, plus the massive Nebraska Furniture Mart on Highway 121.

Grandscape will soon have Texas’ first White Castle burgers.

The former Lava Cantina is a mega-sized 29,000 square feet. The Rustic will swap Lava Cantina’s rock attitude for burgers, beers and Americana music.

“This location lets us welcome Dallas’ northern communities into what we’ve been building for years,” said Sepkowitz, co-owner and CEO of The Rustic’s parent company, FreeRange Concepts. The company is known for its food ‘n fun businesses, like upscale bowling alley Bowl & Barrel and dog park bar Mutts Canine Cantina, both of which were founded in Dallas.

The Rustic is expected to open at 5805 Grandscape Blvd., The Colony. The Dallas restaurant remains at 3656 Howell St., Dallas.
