The Texans only have a pair of returning senior starters, but have three transfers from Veterans Memorial that expect to make a big impact.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — One of the area’s more consistent baseball programs that’s looking to make some postseason noise are the Ray Texans.

The Texans finished second in the 5A district last season, but were sent home in the area round: a three game series loss to Sharyland Pioneer.

Ray only has a couple of senior starters returning off that team, but they also have three transfers that came over from Veterans Memorial that all project to be starters. The Texans say that mix of old and new should give them the depth to compete in an always stacked District 29-5A.

“They’re going to fit in real well,” said senior third baseman/pitcher O.J. Ruiz. “We got one that’s short, one in the outfit, and one who can pitch and hit and do first base and everything.

“We have a little bit of depth this year,” Coach Orlando Ruiz Sr. said. “We’ve got maybe four good pitchers that are going to be consistent for this team.”

The Texans open their season at the Laredo Border Olympics tournament on Thursday, February 19th and then start district against the Alice Coyotes on Monday the 23rd.
