EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — A 3-year-old boy was killed after being struck by an all-terrain vehicle Tuesday afternoon, Feb. 3, in an unincorporated neighborhood of Horizon City, according to the news release by the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office.

After 6 p.m. on Tuesday, deputies were dispatched to the 600 block of Endwall Street to reports of a motor vehicle crash.

When deputies arrived, they saw a crash involving serious injuries, and requested help from the Sheriff’s Office Special Traffic Investigators (STI), who took over the investigation.

Preliminary findings revealed that an ATV was traveling southbound on Endwall Street when it struck a 3-year-old boy who was crossing the roadway, EPCSO said.

The boy was transported to a local hospital where he later died to his injuries. Next of kin have been notified.

“This is a heartbreaking and preventable tragedy,” El Paso County Sheriff Oscar Ugarte said. “ATVs are not permitted on public roadways. These vehicles are not designed for street use, and when they are operated illegally, they create a serious safety risk. Our office will continue to take enforcement action, including impoundment.”

The investigation is ongoing.
