Workers repair a sinkhole on Interstate 10 in Houston on Wednesday, Feb. 4, 2026.

The eastbound lanes on Interstate 10 in East Houston remain closed Thursday because a waterline leak created a sinkhole on the freeway, according to the City of Houston and Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT).

The sinkhole emerged Wednesday on I-10 near its intersection with Federal Lane, according to a social media post by the City of Houston, which said a water line collapsed.

TxDOT crews worked overnight to cap the leak and fill the hole, and that work continued Thursday morning, a spokesperson for the state agency wrote in an email.

All eastbound lanes on that part of I-10 remained closed as repair work continued. The inside lane on westbound I-10 is restricted, TxDOT said.

“Motorists may experience delays, and alternate routes are strongly encouraged,” a TxDOT spokesperson wrote in a news release. “TxDOT appreciates your patience and reminds motorists to drive with caution through work zones and be on the lookout for work crews and their equipment. Area residents should exercise caution if driving, walking, or biking near any construction activity.”
