AUSTIN, Texas — A pedestrian was killed in a crash involving a motor vehicle on Bastrop Highway, Austin police reported.
On Monday, February 2, 2026, at approximately 2:16 p.m., officers from the Austin Police Department responded to the incident in the 1100 block of Bastrop Highway in the northbound lanes. Austin-Travis County Emergency Medical Services also attended the scene and attempted life-saving measures, but the pedestrian, identified as 75-year-old Juan Santos Castro, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to a press release from the department.
The driver involved remained at the scene, was not impaired, and cooperated with the investigation, police said. This incident marks Austin’s seventh fatal crash of 2026, resulting in seven fatalities. On the same date in 2025, five fatal crashes had occurred, resulting in five deaths.
The investigation into the crash is ongoing, and the initial assessment may change as more information becomes available.
