EL PASO, Texas (KFOX14/CBS4) — Why do some stop signs have flashing lights? That is what is driving one viewer crazy this week.

Residents in East El Paso are puzzled by the installation of flashing stop signs at the intersection of Trawood and Mosswood.

Aaron D., a local resident, expressed his confusion, saying, “Over on the east there is a stop sign by where I live on Trawood and Mosswood and I noticed that they changed it to have lights but no one really passes through there.”

The new signs, larger than the originals, were completed in April 2024 after a traffic study of several intersections in the area.

These signs are typically installed in areas with high-risk traffic flow or poor lighting. The El Paso Police Department reported 13 traffic violations at this intersection over the past five years.

Research by the Texas Transportation Institute found a 28.9% reduction in vehicles failing to make a full stop and a 52.9% reduction in vehicles failing to slow down after similar sign changes.
