Beautiful South Plains weekend ahead

  • February 7, 2026

LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – Get ready to enjoy some of the nicest weather of the season this weekend. High pressure is moving into the South Plains, bringing sunshine and some very mild February temperatures, perfect for outdoor activities. I can’t decide if Saturday or Sunday will be the nicest day. I’ll come back to that.

A Great Weather Day

Saturday is shaping up to a standout day. It will be sunny with highs again in the 70s on the Caprock, including Lubbock, and just a little cooler off the Caprock, the eastern viewing area.

Winds begin light, southeasterly, generally less than 10 mph. Becoming southerly, winds pick up in the afternoon to around 10 to 20 mph. A little breezy.

Near ideal weather for getting outside. Take a walk, run errands, visit a park, or catch up on outdoor chores.

Saturday evening brings a slight chance of rain showers. Most of the area, however, will remain dry. If showers do develop I expect them to be very light. A few spots may end up with a few hundredths of an inch.

Temperatures will remain well above freezing Saturday night.

Another Great Weather Day

Sunday continues the nice weather pattern with a mix of sun and clouds. Once again, temperatures will peak in the 70s.

Winds will be lighter, from the northwest, generally less than 10 mph.

It will be another great day to be outside.

The Best Day

Which day will be the “better” weather day, Saturday or Sunday? Afternoon temperatures will be similar each day. Saturday will have more sunshine. Sunday will have less wind.

For me, it comes down to the breeze. Lacking Saturday’s afternoon breeze, Sunday will be a little more comfortable.

Beyond the Weekend

The pleasant weather continues into early next week with highs in the 70s Monday and Tuesday. There is a slight chance of rain showers late Monday into Tuesday, but the chance of measurable rain at your location, or any location, will be low.

Thursday night into Friday, clouds will increase as another weather system approaches. Currently, it appears it also will bring the South Plains area a better chance of precipitation. We also expect temperatures to drop, though data at this time does not indicate a drastic drop.

Whatever your plans, I hope you enjoy your weekend. Keep an eye on our forecast for potential updates. The First Alert Forecast Team will be monitoring the rain chances.

On This Date

On this date in 2011, following the February 1 through 4 Arctic air outbreak, a storm system brought wintry precipitation and winter storm conditions to portions of the extreme southern Panhandle and the South Plains of West Texas. Precipitation began during the early morning hours and gradually transitioned to snow by 7-8 AM.

Virtually all locations across the South Plains saw snowfall during the course of the day. However, with temperatures that only fell to near or just slightly below freezing, accumulations were generally light, short-lived, and of little public impact. A few locales such as Happy, Rhea and Silverton did see snow accumulations up to four inches.
