LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – A local fried pie business will begin selling its products at Circle K convenience stores next week, after a chance encounter at a farmer’s market led to a partnership with the chain.
Plain Jane’s Fried Pies, owned by Melissa Osborne, will start selling four fruit pie varieties at Circle K locations beginning Tuesday.
Osborne has been making fried pies for about six years, starting at markets with her mother before expanding to a food truck and selling at local businesses.
The newest partnership began when Osborne’s husband received a business card from Craig Holmes, regional operations director for Circle K. Holmes had recently moved back to his hometown of Lubbock and discovered Plain Jane’s at the Wolfforth Farmer’s Market.
“They reminded me of my childhood and I was like man, we need to carry these in our stores, they’re fantastic,” Holmes said.
Osborne said the opportunity came as a surprise.
“He said I love your pies, I want your pies in our stores. And I’m like, I mean I almost fell over,” Osborne said.
Holmes said the decision aligned with Circle K’s “super global, super local” motto and his own personal connection to fried pies.
“My mom made fried pies when I was a kid, and man they were good and she actually passed away kind of young, and the recipe was gone with her. And I haven’t found one yet that was just as good, and this was darn close,” Holmes said.
Plain Jane’s will sell four fruit pie varieties at Circle K: apple, peach, cherry and apricot. The pies will debut Tuesday at stores at 66th and Milwaukee and Indiana and the South Loop.
On Wednesday, the pies will expand to four additional locations, including the new store along the Marsha Sharp.
Holmes said Circle K plans to eventually feature Plain Jane’s fried pies at all 11 Lubbock stores and a new location coming to Levelland.
Osborne says Plain Jane’s Fried Pies will continue operating at markets and events, but less frequently as they focus more time on baking for the Circle K partnership.
“This is the biggest dream a girl can ask for, you know just a small-town girl and I’m ready,” Osborne said.
