HEWITT, Texas (KWTX) – A McLennan County man charged in the fatal shooting of his ex-wife’s boyfriend used an “assault rifle” to shoot the victim multiple times, including once in the head, but nonetheless claimed self-defense, according to an arrest warrant and a search warrant obtained by KWTX.
Eric Enriquez, 50, is charged with murder, according to jail records.
Police officers were dispatched to the 100 block of Saddle Horn Drive to investigate a report that at least 10 rounds were fired from a weapon shortly before 9 p.m. on Feb. 5. The McLennan County Sheriff’s Office dispatch also reportedly received several calls reporting multiple gunshots in the area.
The officers arrived at the scene and found George A. Turrubiartez, 54, dead in the driveway of the residence, according to the affidavit. The victim was found with several gunshot wounds in the chest and abdominal area, including “one in the head,” police alleged in the affidavit.
After the officers called on the occupants of the home to exit the residence, Enriquez walked out into the porch with his hands up, the arrest affidavit states.

Officers placed Enriquez under arrest, and without being questioned, Enriquez told the officers he was defending his home, the affidavit states. “Eric stated the [victim] had threatened him and that he had a right to defend himself,” police wrote in the arrest affidavit.
Detectives arrived at the scene and spoke with a woman, identified in the search warrant as Gina Perez, who stated Turrubiartez was her live-in boyfriend and Enriquez is her ex-husband.
Perez and Enriquez were both taken to the Hewitt Police Department for questioning.
According to one of the warrants, Perez told detectives that Turrubiartez read a text message between her and Enriquez, became angry and left her residence.
Perez further told detectives she was tracking Turrubiartez’s location and realized he appeared to be heading in the direction of Enriquez’s residence.
Enriquez also told detectives that he started receiving calls and text messages from Turrubiartez stating that he was on his way to his residence, the search warrant states.
Enriquez further said he started watching his surveillance cameras and went out to his porch when he saw Turrubiartez arrive at the residence in a 2021 Chrysler 300, the warrant states.
In the warrant, police wrote that Enriquez believed “it [was] clear George [Turrubiartez] arrived at the residence to start an altercation.”
Enriquez told police that Turrubiartez began saying “mother*****r,” and Enriquez fired his weapon at Turrubiartez, the document states.
Enriquez said that he does not remember how many times he shot Turrubiartez, but when he fell to the ground, he was not moving or making noise, according to the search warrant.
Enriquez told police that he then entered his residence, unloaded his firearm and placed it on the couch, the document states.
Police wrote in the warrant that the weapon is an “assault rifle.”
When told he would be charged with murder, according to the arrest warrant, Enriquez told police the victim “shouldn’t have been there” and that “he would do it again.”
Enriquez was booked into the McLennan County Jail on a $750,000 bond.
