A Bad Bunny-themed pop-up at The Rim in San Antonio is churning up online backlash after several local influencers were invited to visit the attraction before its official opening date.Â
The pop-up event is being hosted by Chicago-based event organizer ACRO Presents inside That Venue, which is located at the former home of The Rustic. The traveling ACRO Presents attraction touts itself “as a shared space for the Latino community to come together, connect, and celebrate our culture.”
However, in a Tuesday update to Instagram, San Antonio-based influencer Jacklyn Salinas said that wasn’t exactly the vibe she got when she visited the pop-up in an an early event preview.Â
“I attended a Bad Bunny themed cultural activation happening this weekend that was meant to celebrate culture, music, and community. During the experience, we were told we could write quotes, lyrics, or messages that felt meaningful to Bad Bunny and to us. When I said I wanted to write ‘ICE OUT,’ I was discouraged from doing so and told it might give the wrong impression,” Salinas wrote.Â
The “ICE OUT” quote is in reference to recent anti-ICE comments Bad Bunny made during his acceptance speeches at the Sunday evening Grammy Awards: “Before I say thanks to god, I’m going to say ICE out. We’re not savage. We’re not animals. We’re not aliens. We are humans and we are Americans,” the artist said.
In a statement sent to MySA, That Venue co-owner Moe Kassin said the interaction was “a series of unfortunate events.”
“Most of the owners and people that work with us are immigrants, or they come from immigrant families,” Kassin said. “I didn’t want to completely shut (Salinas) down, because I’m like, ‘I get you,’ and it’s what Bad Bunny stands for … But I was like, I just want to refrain from having the word ‘ICE’ on the wall.”Â
After the public’s heated response to Salinas’ post, however, Kassin and That Venue are now permitting venue visitors to express themselves more freely.
“If people want to come in and write however they feel, because it is part of what’s going on, we’re OK with it,” Kassin told MySA. “But … let’s say, no profanity.”
The pop-up will be open from Friday through Sunday at That Venue. Visit ACRO Presents’ event site for more details.
